Seminar #2 - Biophilic Design - Connecting to Nature

Saturday Oct 10th, 9:15am - 10:45am

Description: This session will provide an overview of strategies for urban biophlia and will particularly address the health and well being impacts of connection to nature, the role of nature in child development, and the challenges of funding biophilic projects. A central theme of the presentations is the equitable distribution of natural amenities. We know that connection to nature at different levels of scale (indoor plants, backyard gardens, neighborhood parks, sky gardens, urban green spaces, daylight) has consequences for health and well being, and we also know that these benefits do not reach everyone and all places in urban environments.

Seminar #3 - South Lawn Case Study

Saturday Oct 10th, 11:00am - NOON

Presenters: John Ruble, FAIA and Krista Becker, AIA, LEED AP

Summary/Project Description

The South Lawn Project will be the first LEED Certified project at the University of Virginia. As at other campuses, student initiative has played a positive role in moving the University to take this important step toward a more sustainable development of buildings and grounds. While the project is on track for a LEED Silver certification- which many institutions would now regard as a minimum requirement- it is noteworthy in several respects:

  • Holistic campus planning - the higher density of the project maximizes open space, expands the Central Grounds as a pedestrian district while resolving vehicular conflicts along Jefferson Park Avenue, provides universal access in topographically challenging terrain, enhances connectivity to public transit, and leverages the re-use of the Universityís largest existing classroom building.
  • South Lawnís integration of building and landscape is inspired by the great example of Jeffersonís original Lawn, with an ambitious program to restore site hydrology.
  • Building longevity is enhanced by translating the Universityís celebrated classical architectural language into durable, integral-color and/or factory-finished materials.
  • Historic and cultural resources of the neighboring Foster Family Home Site are celebrated in a new interpretive garden.

Presentation Outline

Project Background and Planning Context: extending the Central Grounds to a new southerly district, and setting the stage for new development to the East; the South Lawn terrace as campus connector and multi-use open space.

Sustainable Building Fabric: architectural planning/ how the building works in three dimensions; review of LEED points and specific materials and systems; sustainability features that enhance social and programmatic utility.

Site Development and Restoration: the scope of the landscape program; restoring site hydrology; trading an asphalt parking lot for sustainable building and grounds; a Jefferson-inspired water circuit.

Cultural/ Historic Resources: the archeological findings of the Foster Family Home Site; landscape design for an interpretive garden.

Summary and Looking Forward: Jeffersonian integration of building and landscape; the Universityís current and future commitment to sustainability; student initiatives; the South Lawn as an environment for learning.
